Sedans, coupes, SUVs, minivans and crossovers are the most common vehicles we lend against. Value is driven by year, make, model, mileage and condition — a well-maintained mid-size sedan or SUV often holds strong equity even at higher mileage.

You may be able to junk a car with a title loan, but you generally cannot treat the vehicle as if it has a clear title. When you take out a title loan, the lender typically places a lien on the vehicle’s title. This gives the lender a legal interest in the vehicle until the loan is satisfied or the lien is otherwise resolved.
If your car is totaled, no longer drivable, or in need of expensive repairs, contact your lender before arranging to junk it. The lender can explain the outstanding balance, its requirements for releasing the lien, and whether it will consider another arrangement. You will still owe the outstanding balance of the loan even if the car is junked or totaled.
A car title loan is a secured loan, meaning the vehicle serves as collateral for the money you borrow. The lender’s lien helps protect its interest in that collateral while the loan remains unpaid.
According to the Federal Trade Commission’s guide to car title loans, borrowers generally do not receive their title free of the lender’s interest until they repay the loan and satisfy the applicable requirements. Junking a vehicle involves more than simply handing over the keys. Depending on state requirements, you may need to transfer ownership, surrender the title, or provide specific documentation to a salvage yard.
An active lien can complicate those steps. Even if the car has little resale value, the outstanding loan does not automatically disappear because the vehicle is damaged or no longer operational.
Junking a vehicle does not automatically cancel your title loan. You may still owe the outstanding balance even if the car cannot be driven or is worth very little as scrap.
One possible option is to pay the loan in full before junking the car. Ask your lender for a current payoff amount, including any applicable fees, and find out how the lien will be released.
