More from the Platinum VIP team

Once the lien has been properly released and the title documentation is updated as required, you can generally proceed with transferring or disposing of the vehicle, subject to state rules.

However, if your vehicle has very little value, the payoff amount may be much higher than what you could receive from a junkyard. Compare the costs before deciding how to proceed.

If you cannot afford to pay off the loan, contact the lender to discuss your situation. Explain that the vehicle is no longer usable and ask whether any options are available.

Depending on the lender and the circumstances, you may be able to discuss a negotiated payoff, another repayment arrangement, or a process for handling the damaged vehicle. Do not assume that a lender will agree to release its lien in exchange for the car’s scrap value.

A vehicle that no longer runs may still have value for its parts, metal, or salvageable components. Obtain quotes from more than one reputable junkyard or salvage buyer if possible.

For example, imagine your car has an outstanding title loan balance of $2,000, but a salvage yard offers $500 for the vehicle. The $500 offer does not automatically satisfy the $2,000 debt. You would need to work with your lender to determine how the vehicle can be transferred and how the remaining balance must be handled.

Before making arrangements with a junkyard, take these steps to understand your options and avoid unnecessary complications.

Step 1: Contact your lender. Explain the vehicle’s condition and ask for the current payoff balance, lien-release requirements, and any available alternatives.

Step 3: Get junkyard or salvage quotes. Compare offers, but tell potential buyers that the vehicle has an outstanding title loan. Ask what documentation they require before accepting the vehicle.

Step 4: Review your loan agreement. Check the terms regarding collateral, default, insurance, and the lender’s rights if the vehicle is damaged or destroyed.
